We have successfully treated Jaundice, Hepatitis, Fatty liver, Hepatomegaly (enlargement of liver), Liver abscess, Liver cirrhosis and gallstones are the common liver disorders patients.
Fatty Liver Disease and Ayurveda
Liver diseases are on the rise due to unhealthy food habits, excess alcohol intake, pollution and wreckless usage of prescription medicines. Fatty Liver is the result of accumulation of fat in the liver cells or hepatocytes. Storage of carbohydrate as glycogen for stabilization of blood glucose levels and conversion of fats into lipoproteins is done by the liver. Bile secreted by the liver is essential for fat absorption. By regulating ammonia and plasma glucose levels it also helps in normal functioning of brain. Steady conversion or breaking down of fat in the liver is impaired in fatty liver condition resulting in the accumulation fat in the liver cells. Till fat content of liver is below 10% of the weight of the liver it is harmless. When fat content exceed this limit it impairs normal functions. When there is only fatty infiltration condition it is called simple fatty infiltration or steatosis. Excess alcohol consumption can result in inflammation of fatty liver and the condition is called alcoholic steatohepatitis. In the absence of alcoholic consumption, obesity or diabetes mellitus patients may develop inflammation resulting in non alcoholic steatohepatitis. Progress of the disease will result in cirrhosis. Usually fatty liver does not cause serious symptoms and is diagnosed during a routine checkup. This major organ is considered as the site of Pitha humor by Ayurveda. Unhealthy food and life style cause impairment of fire principle and leads to fatty liver.
AYURVEDIC TREATMENT OF LIVER CIRRHOSIS
Cirrhosis is a complication of many liver diseases. It is a chronic condition in which the liver slowly deteriorates and malfunctions due to chronic injury. Scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue, partially blocking the flow of blood through the liver.
Fibrosis describes encapsulation or replacement of injured tissue by a collagenous scar. Liver fibrosis results from the perpetuation of the normal wound healing response resulting in an abnormal continuation of fibrogenesis (connective tissue production and deposition). Fibrosis progresses at variable rates depending on the cause of liver disease, environmental and host factors. Cirrhosis is an advanced stage of liver fibrosis that is accompanied by distortion of the hepatic vasculature.
It is a progressive disease, developing slowly over many years. If it is allowed to continue, the buildup of scar tissue can eventually stop liver function. For cirrhosis to develop, long-term, continuous damage to the liver needs to occur.
Ayurvedic Treatment for Hepatitis B
There are some diseases which if detected earlier, can be treated and cured. But some diseases are such that they work as a silent killer inside our body. They do not show any symptoms and by the time we come to know that we are suffering from it, it has become too late and the disease has already progressed to an advanced stage. Hepatitis B is one of such diseases.
Hepatitis B is an infectious disease caused by a DNA virus. Hepatitis B is transmitted through physical contact and infected blood. Almost 400 million suffer from this disease all over the world from which almost 45 million people belong to India. Hepatitis B is the third most deadly disease in the category of infectious diseases.
Ayurvedic Treatment for Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is an infectious disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The virus spreads through blood-to-blood contact, and is usually associated with the use of intravenous drug use, blood donations and other unhygienic use of medical equipment leading to exchange of blood. Once infected, a patient can go years without facing severe symptoms, like liver failure and cirrhosis, only to feel it’s accumulated effects after a long period. HCV affects over 8 million people in the country and has been a cause of major cause for concern, however social stigma associated with the disease also makes it a challenge to implement successful eradication drives. Now, a new class of drug resistant strand of HCV have emerged making the situation worse. A group of scientists from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have now come up with a possible deterrent to the virus, derived from a common herb used to relieve pain. Boerhavia diffusa is a flowering plant and a common ingredient in many ayurvedic medicine, with the plant commonly referred to as a punarnava, something that rejuvenates the body. Now, with their new study, the scientists have identified dehydrorotenoid boeravinone H, a compound found in the plant, as a possible inhibitor of the HCV virus. The study showed that the presence of the compound inhibiting the entry and binding of particles like HCV, with no noticeable side-effects. Although researchers are still studying as to how exactly the compound inhibits HCV growth, the result could be used to develop a new class of drugs to fight the drug resistant HCV’s. The herbs that were prescribed by our elders may have had some truth after all.
Jaundice treatment in Ayurveda
Jaundice is a liver disorder. It is a sign or symptom of several different diseases.
Jaundice causes white area of skin and eyes to acquire a distinct yellow colour. This is due to the presence of a bile pigment called bilirubin in very high levels. Bilirubin is a normal breakdown product of haem. Haem is the iron-based compound contained in haemoglobin.
Liver is one of the largest organs in the human body and is the metabolic powerhouse with more than 500 identified functions. Liver produces substances such as bile and proteins, metabolizes our foods and detoxifies blood of unwanted hormones, chemicals and toxins. Liver produces and stores glycogen which regulates the body’s energy supply.
The two main kinds of jaundice are haemolytic jaundice and obstructive jaundice.
The most prevalent disorders of liver are jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis and tumors.
Ayurvedic treatment of Jaundice involves pacifying aggravated body energies using herbs that stimulate the function of the liver and increase the flow of bile in the bile duct. Digestion is also restored with the help of a customized diet plan to ensure efficient metabolism.
